My grandmother's garden

My grandmother's husband is a passionate gardener, always plugging away in the backyard, growing fruit and vegies, and beautiful flowers. We arrived shortly before cold weather set in, so we caught the last blooms of autumns before they withered and faded away.

Last Weekend - Gayndah

I've been sick all week, so am finally able to catch up on blogging last weekend.
We have a couple of friends who were born and raised in Gayndah, a little country town of about 3000 people, situated approximately 150km North-West of Gympie. Gayndah and its arch rival (seriously) Mundubbera are a citrus-growing region, and every two years Gaynday hosts the Orange Festival, where the population of the town swells to around 10'000!! All the expats who have moved onto bigger cities come back, and bring along their big city friends. For the majority of the weekend there were 10 people staying at our friend's parents' house, and most of the town is the same.
Sadly the weather was rather awful (freezing cold and rain), but the hospitality we enjoyed was wonderful.
I'm breaking my photos up into different events/posts to follow...

New flowers

The birds of paradise I bought a few weeks ago lasted about 2.5 weeks, which I was really happy with, so I have decided to get natives, again, in the hope that they will also last. 5 bucks at the West End markets - a good deal, I think.

A splash of Summer

The weather has cooled down dramatically in the last few days, so on the weekend I treated myself to some lovely Bird of Paradise flowers to bring a piece of the tropics inside.

Update on my seedling

I've neglected my poor little plant outside a little lately, so I didn't notice until this weekend that another two blossoms have flowered. I just love the colour on these - so bright and cheery.

The Seedling Mark II - Week 3

I've been a bit slack, so this is the plant at the 3 week mark. I haven't taken a photo since, as it doesn't seem to be changing all that much right now. I'll put up another pic once the damn thing actually flowers.
My apologies to Alan, I know you've been following its progress.

The Seedling Mark II - Week 1

Now that the evil caterpillars have vanquished the plant seems to be growing quite fast again.

Weekly seed photos - 11 weeks on

Well, I finally figured out what's been eating my plant. These caterpillars have made my plant their home and deposited their offspring. The little bastards..

So I decided to cut it all back and start again. Weekly plant photo mark II.

Green & Hot

Our chili tree is back in business - about 5 green chilies are hanging in there at the moment. I think it'll only be a couple of weeks until they turn that lovely dark shade of yellow that this variety produces.

Weekly seed photos - 9 weeks on

I'm starting to wonder when this will actually start flowering.
